About the Company

Located in the southside of Terrace, British Columbia, The Fix Café and Cyclery – along with their second location, the Fairlie Café – are relaxing, community-focused spaces where people from all walks of life can come together to enjoy top-notch coffee, food, service, and atmosphere. They are more than just cafés – they’re hubs for connection, creativity, and local spirit.

Why We Love Them

At Tandem, the best work happens when values align – and that’s exactly what we found with The Fix Café and Cyclery. Their clear communication, care for community, and people-first leadership made this collaboration both smooth and meaningful.

We partnered with The Fix and the Fairlie on People & Culture initiatives that included co-creating policies and an employee handbook, developing compensation structures and job descriptions, designing a performance management workflow, and running employee feedback interviews to support a culture of continuous improvement.

Working with owners Heather and Jason felt less like consulting and more like building something regenerative together. We’re honoured by the trust they placed in us and inspired by the way they lead their teams with heart and compassion.

Our Journey Together

We met The Fix team in July 2024, just as they were expanding into a new location and onboarding a mix of new and existing staff. They were looking for clear, consistent guidelines to support a strong culture – things like a code of conduct, clarity around employment standards (including sick days and time off), and practices to help everyone feel aligned from day one.

They wanted to create a more cohesive People & Culture foundation that would not only meet regulatory compliance with the BC Employment Standards Act, but also reflect the inclusive and community-driven culture they were building.

Working alongside them, we helped them establish a rooted People & Culture framework, including an employee handbook, job descriptions aligned with BC standards, a compensation review and salary band structure, and a performance review workflow.

We also conducted an employee satisfaction survey to help leadership better understand team needs, and provided coaching on how to lead and support employees in ways that are both strategic and compassionate.

Outcomes

The Fix now has the tools, clarity, and cultural alignment they need to grow with intention. Heather shared that, with their newly developed People & Culture policies and an employee handbook in place, “our team has a shared understanding of expectations, responsibilities, and workplace values.”

These supports are already helping leadership create a more consistent and supportive employee experience – one that meets the deeper needs of a people-first workplace. “We’re already seeing how this work is helping us boost morale, simplify day-to-day operations, and prepare for sustainable growth as we open new locations,” Jason added.

What's Next

As they prepare to scale operations in Fall 2025, we’ll continue supporting The Fix’s growing team by streamlining training modules, customizing onboarding toolkits, reviewing employment contracts, and building a smooth, values-aligned process for bringing new team members on board.
